Last but never least, the greater good!!

When compassion to one another is key for a greater future.

Another project for the greater good, I always wondered how immigrants and expats would get assistance when they move to a new place and need to adapt to new environments, my first thought was obviously, careers, a job for them to support their families in their new home.

Ladies and Gentlemen: “Skill-it” a platform where immigrants, expats can find information related to job listings, careers, policies, required skills to achieve their goals and receive guidance to everything career related.

Skill-it Case study

The problem:

  • Users were not able to locate job listings

  • Users were not able to update their profile/resume

  • There was no functionality to apply for jobs

  • Users preferred to save skill for later

  • Course links page was added as a feature

The goal:

  • Enable users to navigate to any page throughout the app, regardless of the page they are on

  • Enabling users to apply for listed jobs and find company/career info and policy.

  • Enable users to save skills. Jobs listings for later to apply when ready

  • Enable users to check skills required to qualify for each job.

How it happened:

  • I made one on one interviews with multiple Users for this Job skill app, created Personas , identified the user needs and shared Ideas, I was also able to take notes and observe users proceed with the usability study in order to create a prototype then refine it, iterate and re-design and prototype after letting the users test the prototype.

Our targeted users were immigrants, expats who are trying to find more skills, qualifications for their career, or basic job hunting and assist them to get recruited and understand the policies for the job they wish to apply for and adapt to the new environment they moved in.

    • Users were not able to navigate easily

    • Users did not have a functionality to apply for a job listing

    • Users preferred uploading their resume on desktop in their profile

    • Users wanted content to be organized and were confused between some pages

  • Each user should be able to navigate from any page they are currently on, save skills and applying for job functionality should be added, and push notifications besides Thank you confirmation page should be added as a end result of applying

  • Got the creative juices flowing and started designing basic paper wireframes to ideas and understand the user journey,

Managed to add multiple features through the process and included profile page with add resume, course details, add skills, and listings pages.

  • - Wanted to align the main pages in bottom shortcut menu, enable button and icons to be clickable,

    - rename different pages to avoid users being confused of fulfilling the main user flow

    - while each area of the site should be organized based on related items, menus.

Conclusion:

Impact:

This app will assist all users from different shapes and sizes, it was created for greater good to assist immigrants, expats and any user who wishes to advance their career, be assisted in finding a job and finding qualification and skills info in a new place they moved to or even after a period or moving while adapting to their new surroundings.

What I learned:

I learned during creating and designing this desktop design, in combination with a mobile app that go hand in hand, that helping people in need is an amazing thing and really advances our career as designers, while biases tend to hinder the creative process and mobile app combined with tasks on desktop thrive on each other and fill in the user experience as a whole.
